The Plough, Rede, Bury St Edmunds
This project secured both planning permission and listed building consent from West Suffolk Council for the conversion of the Grade II listed Plough public house into a five-bedroom family home.
A comprehensive marketing exercise and viability assessment demonstrated that the public house was no longer economically viable. With limited demand for its continued operation and comparable alternatives available in nearby villages, the proposal provided a new and sustainable use for an under-utilised heritage asset.
The mid-16th-century building required exceptionally sensitive design. By identifying its historic domestic use, carefully navigating the existing building fabric, and creating a well-considered reconfiguration scheme, the conversion preserved the property’s architectural and historical significance while delivering a spacious family home.
Engagement with local residents and the parish was integral to the process. Consultation confirmed that the proposed use aligned with the community’s aspirations, ensuring the building’s future was secured in a way that respected both its heritage and its long-term viability.
