Royal George, Walton-on-Thames

This project involved securing planning permission from Elmbridge Borough Council for a new three-bedroom detached home next to the Royal George Public House. The scheme demonstrated a careful balance between design sensitivity, sustainability, and compliance with local policy.

The design was developed to integrate seamlessly with the surrounding streetscape, reflecting the roof forms of neighbouring dwellings through side roof slopes with gable ends. Window placement to the front and rear ensured daylight reached all habitable rooms, while patio doors at the rear opened onto a generous garden, maximising natural light in the kitchen and living areas.

Landscaping was designed to provide both visual appeal and functional screening, including a buffer strip with low-level planting, 1.8-metre-high native hedges, and acoustic timber fencing to reduce potential impacts from the adjacent public house car park.

Sustainability measures formed a key part of the proposal, with the inclusion of solar panels, an electric vehicle charging point on the private driveway, and a dedicated cycle store in the rear garden to promote sustainable living and active travel.

In accordance with local policy, a proportionate financial contribution towards affordable housing was secured through a Unilateral Undertaking as part of the planning process.
